Alors que tout le monde s'accorde à reconnaître la nécessité de développer des théories explicatives de la population où la dimension sociologique et culturelle des phénomènes démographiques soit réellement prise en compte, les travaux dans ce domaine restent encore extrêmement rares. La Chaire Quetelet 1981 constitue de ce point de vue une exception puisque, pour la première fois sans doute, sociologues et démographes se sont réunis pendant trois jours pour confronter leurs hypothèses au sujet des rapports entre structures sociales et population.
